A huge part of auctioneering is how you control your volume. You have to make sure that everyone can clearly understand what you are saying.
The standard thought process with this is that the auctioneer feels the need to shout a lot to be heard. It needs to be at the same level all of the time and has to be as loud as possible.
There are a few issues with this. Firstly for those who have huge voices, they tend to drown anything out around the message or the urgency because they are just being too loud. Secondly, if the auctioneer is not that loud, then they strain their voices and as a result struggle to focus on the rest of the auction.
Being loud also takes up a lot of energy. So irrespective of how loud you are, it will be really hard to make it through an entire auction if you are at peak volume.
The biggest issue with being at the same volume the entire time though is that buyers will switch off. There is no attempt to make authentic connection with the crowd. Auctioneers are just shouting to get the job done without thinking of the consequences.
Have you seen those fight films where the small master always beats the big muscly guy?! This is what we mean- there is no point having all the power if you don’t know how to use it.
Going at buyers with full volume the whole time is a great way to stop buyers from getting or remaining involved. By adding different levels you allow for more give and take, which means that buyers may interact more. This adds colour to any auction as well as providing a much warmer atmosphere, which encourages bidding as a result.
